RFTCC-Wingbiter Friday 6/12, 6;30 PM FROM NORFOLK CENTER!!!!

The temperature is predicted to be 90 degrees on Friday night. So, in the immortal words of John Lockwood: "It's 90 degrees! Let's ride hills!"

Note that this week, the Wingbiter will originate from Norfolk center near Infinity Hall. It will commence at 6:30 pm, to give people extra time to get out there.

Please tell me if there's any reason--any good reason--we can't ride any of these roads:

Do they have waffle fries?

I have looked many times for Wheeler Rd and have never found it. I am nearly certain that if it does exist that you cannot ride it on a road bike. Lew might be able to help us if he peeking into the Friday threads.

Will we be have libation in Norfolk or travel back to Chat's after?

In reply to JRogowski

Libation in Norfolk, of course! I'm also asking Scott Holmes to look at this route and tell me what he thinks.

A couple of problems I see with route. Doolittle to Deerfield Rd/ Summer Rd...I think Deerfield/Summer is private rd for Doolittle Lake association. You can stay on Doolittle and take it down to Loon Meadow. Wheeler Rd does not connect to 272 unless you wanna hike a bike with machetes. Turn left off Wheeler on Elmore (dirt, but pretty smooth) which brings you out to 272. Bald Mountain Rd is unpaved for the most part and bomb cratered where it is paved. Last time I looked at it was definitely not road bikeable...steep and loose gravel. Suggest you continue on Tobey Hill Rd to Canaan Valley rd to 44.

Thanks, Lew, I'm going to take all the advice I get today and post a new, improved route tomorrow.

Yeah, what Lew said. Bald Mountain is a great road, but only for a cross bike.

Okay, so here's what's going on now: New route

Wheeler is paved at least as far as the Elmore turn off...chip sealed...no problem on a road bike. I don't think there is a sign for Wheeler where it begins ( going straight where Doolittle bears off 90 degrees to the right...I think there may be a sign for Doolittle at that right turn). I'm pretty sure there is a sign for Wheeler where it turns 90 degrees left, so look for that. If you miss it and keep going straight, you end up on Barry Hill Rd and will probably never be seen alive again.

"probably never be seen alive again". Perhaps it would be in our benefit to bribe Lew and John with a certain libation to attend this event and guide us through the wilderness to safety.

I like that idea! Kinda like surrogate ride leaders.
I'd like to hear more about the recent condition of Elmore "dirt" road. Has Scott added his 2 cents yet?

In reply to Doug

Rode it last night... Toby Hill --> Elmore --> Wheeler... All good. Actually the dirt roads are in better shape then many of the paved roads.

If we lose Brett can we still go to his house for the ride and picnic on Sunday?

In reply to JoeD

Great! Will be nice to see some new scenic vistas (and potholes). You will be coming along on the ride, correct? ;)

The route has significant overlap with Sunday's route so maybe we'll find him then and drag him home.

Hi All, I'm taking a look at the map now…Wheeler is fine - we just have to access it via Elmore. That last little part to 272 is a "cart path".

It is so exciting to see a ride going off out of a new town - there are so many cool roads out in Norfolk/Colebrook area. I am sure they will welcome us at Infinity hall with open arms - as long as we use our indoor voices...

BTW, the Infinity Hall Bistro closes at 9:00. We are better off going to the corner pub, Wood Creek. We might not have to be so well behaved there either.

The only suggestion I have on the route for Friday is starting via Shepard rd to Lovers Lane right from the parking lot. This way we are not out on rt 44 right out of the parking lot (and we don't have to do that climb right away). It will put us out on 44 right down the road from turn to 182.

On the way back we could take ashpotagh rd to avoid more time in the dark on rt 44 - at the top we just take a right on 272 and coast into town.

Wood Creek has a nice little outdoor seating area if it is not all full….

Scott - You mean Shepard to Laurel Way, correct?

Wish I could join you guys, but I still have some evening obligations that make it tough to sneak out for more than an hour to ride. Have a good safe ride !
