Tuesday (11/17) Off-Road Night Ride (CP) - Simsbury

Time: 6:30pm

Location: Commuter lot at the intersection of Wilcox Street and Iron Horse Blvd, Simsbury (Behind the Bank of America drive-up ATM).

What is this?: Off-road, night-time cyclocross/mountain bike ride. Mix of rail trail, dirt roads and singletrack trails throughout the Farmington Valley. Keep your road bikes at home.

What should I bring?: Handlebar or helmet light (or both), rear strobe light, bike clothing appropriate for the weather (it can get cold after sunset). Bring a change of clothes for a post-ride beer, as well as extra money to buy a beer for the swell ride leaders.

Route: Around and about.

This week's weather: Temps will be in the mid to high 30s by ride time.

"Winter Pace" will be strictly enforced.

We may need to find a new start location this week as I just heard iron horse Blvd will be closed all day for a murder investigation.

I checked last night and we should be okay. They shut down at 5:00 pm and only the area east of the rail trail is closed at night.

If, by any chance, the normal parking area is closed off tonight, our default backup is the Bank of America parking lot on the other side of the drive-up ATM.

Are they just now getting around to looking into that woman who was stabbed, I would assume most the evidence is gone by now? or do we have more Simsbury fatalities, if so, we should permanently move the location since we're averaging two murders a year in our parking lot.

And that leads me naturally to my third point - I can't make it tonight.

Chilly night. Can we stay in the local woods up north?

If we move our starting location, then the murderers/terrorists win! (Of course, we survive, which might be a good consolation.)

Seriously, I heard that the road was closed because the FBI is now investigating the year old murder of the insurance executive on Iron Horse Blvd..

Lots of yellow tape up along the bike path to keep people from going into the woods there. I get the impression there is a search for something specific. I know of a geocache back in there. :)

BTW, I'm sure you'd like to know that I managed to keep up your tradition of falling on each off road ride by falling myself within 3 feet of leaving the paved road surface 1/2 mile from the parking lot. Duh. Slippery leaves, steep inclines, and smooth tires don't go together. My hat's off, as usual, to those on cross bikes (Eric).
