Sunday Club ride 5/3 at 9:00

All I'll be leading the Sunday Club ride this week, Starting out of the 179/44 commuter lot in Canton @ 9:00am.

i am working on a route. open to suggestions

We have decided to move the start location to the commuter lot at 179/44 intersection.

I'll be there, Brett. Any chance you could do me a favor and print a cue sheet? I tried doing it in Strava without success. If not, I understand.

Check that. Just figured it out. See you tomorrow

As I mentioned to you on one of the several times you passed me (that was me in the blue jersey) the Strava cue sheet is COMPLETELY UNFOLLOWABLE. That despite the fact that I have a degree in Geography. I'd really like to ride the routes you do on Sunday's, but when riding solo, it's very frustrating getting lost when Strava can't even tell you which way to turn at a T intersection. Which occurred four times on the published route. Any suggestions for me?

Mike, I wasn't on the ride yesterday but have a couple of thoughts for you.

While that ride was mapped out on Strava, many/most of our club rides are mapped on ridewithgps.com. The upcoming Tuesday Night ride was just put out on the Forum and I checked the Cue Sheet and at a quick glance looked good. If you find ridewithgps works for you, if someone does put a ride out on Strava, you could simply remap it yourself on ridewithgps.

Of course it's expensive, but buying a Garmin that includes mapping is the easiest way to follow a route. Both Strava and ridewithgps are easily downloadable to the unit, then just follow the line and directions.

Hope this helps. No fun trying to follow a route when the directions aren't clear.

All of the mapping programs have hiccups and farts. Even auto GPS systems occasionally send people over cliffs and into canals.

I use RideWithGPS to create routes and upload the files into my Garmin. When creating a route, I need to be careful NOT to click on an intersection, otherwise a left turn may become a right turn, followed by a U-turn in 50 yards to head in the opposite direction. I need to click on the road well past the turn for the cue sheet to work correctly. I don't know for sure, but maybe the same thing happens with Strava. Or maybe its just the fact that these mapping programs are not that accurate on some of our back roads.

The only way I have found to do an accurate cue sheet is to ride the route and write it down. Unfortunately, that's not practical for most of our nearly 40 rides per month. That's why we have ride leaders and regrouping. The advance publishing of routes is recommended (but optional) and is intended to just give folks a heads-up on what to expect. Also, a lot of folks like to know the route because they ride from home and join the ride in progress.

Walt and Dino- thanks for the advice. I'll try ridewithgps next time. I tried just printing last Sunday's cue sheet and the problem was at several T intersections there was no direction as to right or left turns.

As far as riding with the group, I am nowhere near fast enough so what I did was start the route at 8:40. The group passed me at mile 11. So I don't feel comfortable holding up the ride.

I'll work it out on my own

Mike,

I know you're still trying to learn some of the area roads. Maybe you can try posting something to the Ride Forum to try to organize a Saturday or Sunday morning ride - just post a desired pace and distance and maybe a few folks will bite and can someone else can lead the ride and show you around. We could use some more Saturday rides anyway, especially ones at a more social pace.

Thanks, John. Good suggestion. Unfortunately, as yet, all the roads I know are near me in Terryville (and very dangerous.) I'll work on it.
