Kent Gravel Grinder
What better way to prep for VT? Cool self supported ride. Check it out Kent Gravel Grider
I like it, I like it. And will plan on doing this one
I am also thinking of riding this event. Its been about ten years since I road the cross bike with disc brakes. Looks like I am going to be removing the cobwebs off the bike, no really.
So Im wondering about what gearing others are going to be riding? It sounds like maybe gravel road climbs with greater than 12% grades. Woud a 39 x 27 be low enough,? Any thoughts?
Gearing, really? Expect to see "The Captain" break off his derailer after getting a black bear caught in his wheel, shorten his chain to a single speed using a rock as a chain tool, and then welding his hub to the front fork after his skewer snaps using magnesium shavings and bic lighter. Despite this he will still drop everyone. Think this is the stuff of legend? Wait and see.
Great to have you back Randy. We've missed you!
Pat
Does that mean your coming Pat?
Sounds like we want you on a 42/23. I just transitioned to compact/Kiddie gears on my Roubaix 34/32. I plan to ride this. Sounded like there's some good climbs.

If you're in I'll probably ride it as long as the weather is okay. We can pace each other and prepare for VT.
Sorry Mike but April 23rd is the Quabbin RR. Unless it is 40 degrees and raining in which case I will skip this ride also. Have fun and don't be lured into chasing Randy. He's wiley that one.
Brent is in - I'm In.
Hi Randy, it's great to have you back on the road!
It's this Saturday. Weather looks OK - some rain forecasted for Friday and 20% for Saturday with a high of 60. If that means anything at this time. There is a rain date of April 30th. Route Should be a great ride!
I'm out. Too much other stuff to do this weekend.
Brent
Hoping Brent will be our only casualty, before the ride even starts.
Looks like weather will be good, 55 degrees to start then maybe hit 70, partly cloudy. Brent I was hoping you would be there with your gps, to help guide us. So instead I just printed the clue sheet (from the link) & I will bring my reading glasses. (Oh what fun)
Looks like there are 3 stores along the way. First one is a Cumberland Farms. Maybe the middle one will have best food of the ride, is just beyond the half way point, mile 45. Interesting to see that all the stores are found in the valleys at base elevations.
So lets estimate 12 mph. Start at 8 am. First stop Cumberland Farms, 20 miles at about 9:45. 15 minute break, Second stop Millbrook Deli, mile 45, arrive about 12:30, half hour break. 3rd or last store-stop Rennis store at mile 56 arrive about 2;30. 15 minute break. Ride 30 more miles to finish at about 5;15 PM.
Im going to experiment with one Rolly Polly out back and the other a Ruffy Tuffy tire up front. Air pressure is still a mystery since I have no clue to the conditions of the gravel roads. But Im thinking like 65 lbs. Maybe I will start with 100 lbs and down pressure as the conditions dictate or slightly after my upper body rattles apart, ?
Gearing 50/ 34 up front with a 11 32 or 34 out back. I takin no chances. This for me is survival.
I feel confident about this ride, because last night I rode the res loop for the first time in 8 years, from avon , solo due to my late arrival, I think Im all prepped for this ride. Cant wait............ Can you say 20/20 hind sight?
A guy named Randy once told me not to fret over the cue sheet, just follow the bike tire tracks ;)
Too bad Brent we'll miss you. Can't say I haven't had cold feet. I'll be riding my Roubaix with 32's. It's that or my heavy ass full suspension. Took the Roubaix for a test ride and it's sketchy going down. About a 1/4 the speed of my mtb. I see why I was passing all the cross guys on the down hills last year. But it's got a 34 up front and 32 in back and way lighter. The stops look to be well spaced. I'll load the map on my garmin and see about putting it on my phone.
I'm out. Magennis is bailing and he was my wheel to stick on. Truthfully, I probably convinced him to bail. After speaking with a few people yesterday I don't have the right gear set for this. The coyotes would have a grand time ripping and tearing apart my organs.
The heck with it count me in with the sissies. I'm going to do some trail work tomorrow. Sorry
