June 10th: 6 Ferry Ride to Orient Point, NY

I’m planning my Six Ferry Ride this season for July 10th. The weather report is really good for Wednesday!! This is a mid-week ride to avoid expected traffic in the Hamptons on the weekend. You’ll need to play hooky!

This year will be longer than in other years,(60 miles), but there is very little climbing. https://ridewithgps.com/users/563593. We leave from New London on the Orient Point ferry @ 8:00 am. Be there by 7:30 to get yourself equipped and pick up a snack or breakfast sandwich at the snack bar on the dock. That will put us on Long Island (Orient Point) at about 9:20 am or so. We’ll pass through Greenport on our way to Shelter Island, North Haven, and Sag Harbor. From Sag we’ll head south east to East Hampton, the beach, and lunch at a spot TBD. Our return will swing a bit west before retracing our route to Greenport and an ice cream stop. Then on to Orient Point and our sea cruise home to New London. I expect to be back in New London by 5:00 - 6:00 pm.

You will need a credit card and cash. New London to Orient Point & return same day rate with bike is $34.00. they take credit cards., The following are cash only!!! Dock Parking in New London, $10.00, North Shelter Island Ferry from Greenport and South Ferry from Shelter Island, same day bike & rider rate $6.00 round trip, each ferry. For lunch and other expenses bring at least $20.00, more is better. I always figure a round number of $60.00 in cash. You can also park in the municipal parking building across the railroad tracks for whatever they're charging at a day rate.

The ride is about 60 miles. I sometimes will alter the route if I see something that looks interesting, or if road work, or lack thereof, changes our path. I’m slow, count on an average speed of 11-12 mph. I’ll provide a cue sheet for those who want them , but don’t hold me to that particular route. Too much can happen within 60 miles of an unsupported ride. This is a no drop ride. If you are behind us we'll wait for you. If you’ve gone ahead and we can’t find you, you’re on your own. I have not done the route from Sag to East Hampton. Usually I’ve gone SW. However, it’s pretty hard to get lost out there if you can make it back to Sag. I and others will be using a GPS or a phone with GPS. My cell number is 860-690-2714.

What to bring: Wind breaker/vest, (the ride over and back is cool). spare tube, tire levers, CO2 cartridges (I have an inflator), water (at least 2 bottles and/or a Camel Back), snacks and energy gells, sunscreen, helmet, gloves, phone if you have one.

Let me know soonest as I’m going to try and limit the trip to 14 riders. Don
