HILLFEST - Wednesday 6/24 - Topic now Open for Debate!

I'll kick off this years HILLFEST discussion with a proposal on the logistics, that way there's so much more to discuss. it would be impressive if we could get the participation level up on this topic to be like a Gluz-free wingbiter thread.

Updated: Fixed route issues and moved start to Canton high school to maintain more of the original route. Here is most current Hillfest Route together

PROPOSAL I say we have a single ride this year on Wednesday 6/24, with a rain date of Thursday 6/25. We split into two distinct groups based on speed, an R/IP and CP, 5:45PM start with a 1 minute separation. That way any CP'ers wanting to hang on for dear life can leave with the first group, I expect that humbling experiment to be concluded by the middle of the first climb. There will be no person left behind the CP group unless they choose to submit to HILLFEST and abandon, all those who abandon must start HILLFEST 2016 training the following day. I also think we need to modify the route slightly to make a safer start location but keep the rest of the ride intact. Starting from 44/179 commuter lot I put this Proposed Hillfest Route together

Now let the dart throwing begin!

When does the ride start?

Christian: The route goes up E Mountain at the beginning, then immediately back down it, and back up it again. Intended or mapping glitch?

Thanks, Walt

  1. Its not HILLFEST or Hillfest, its HillFestĀ©
  2. Your start times nullify the ED group and all the speculation about what ED really stands for. Also, Tom has to start by 3:30 pm so that his nurse can get him to bed early.
  3. East Mountain Road is really much more fun after 3,700 feet of climbing.
  4. There will be a thunderstorm on Town Hill Road in New Hartford, there always is.
  5. Will Jim again be stashing a cooler full of water bottles in the bushes by the vineyard on Town Hill Road?
  6. I once had a dog pee on my rear wheel while I was going up Satan's Elbow.
  7. I'll probably be out of town and miss all the fun this year. Shucks.

Thanks, good catch walt... apparently ridewithGPS now requires you to pay an annual premium to edit rides, so I'll have to map a new one when I get a few minutes and post it up.

Interesting...I can still edit mine with a free account. However, I now see that the turn-by-turn information that is missing from my recent TCX file downloads is because they removed that feature from the free account. Bummer.

Christian, thanks for posting . Looks good. I'd like to offer up a few ideas on how to not change the route which sounds blasphemous.

1 we can simply go the way we always go when returning to the shop except go up east hill instead.

2 we could park at the high school which is even closer to east hill

3 we could park at the canton pool / park which is actually at the base of east hill.

JeffB - Good call, I like the HS option - I've updated the route in original post to start there.

John - there still seems to be basic edit ability, but much of the features like deleting points are now premium. I spent 20 minutes trying to fix the original ride and it wouldn't let me just move a few points around, easier to start from scratch.. it will be a shame if RidewithGPS turns to crap.

Thoughts on start time? I proposed moving up because it seems each year there is a group climbing west mountain and descending E. Hill in total darkness. E. Hill is a horrible road to descend in daylight and straight-dangerous at night.

I think a 5:30-5:45 start time for the CP pace is a good idea. I am still planning on a 6PM start 'cause of that thing called work.

The elbow is a magical place. Didn't you also witness Richie achieve human flight at the same location?

As well as an amazing amount of shrubbery lodged in his helmet vents.

My nurse will be doing the ride in my stead this year. She can leave whenever she wants so long as she's back in time to get me to bed.

It just occured to be that I better confirm High School graduation is not scheduled for 6/24. Stay tuned on that.

I like the idea of 5:45 start (which I will do), and also like the idea of encourage others to leave even earlier based on expected climb rate. Having always left at 6 in the past I typically get home not much better than 8:45 which includes a 1 mile ride home from the high school. It's always pretty dark by then making it difficult to do much waiting during the ride.

...........Also, I'm not too woried about (and frankly glad to be) starting 15 minutes ahead of Pat the mountain goat.

Confirmed. HS graduation is June 19.....Parking lot should be empty. We're good to go!!!

Only cause Gerry is in Arizona, and that title is up for grabs with Tim back on the bike.

In reply to Kring

Start by going north on 179 and make a right onto Morgan... then come down East Mt and get back on the proposed course. Basically, trade Morgan for East Hill.

In reply to pcunningham

Sounds like fun to me. Hope to make it. Work schedule can be unpredictable but am planning on it. Maybe Gerry will fly back for such a grand tradition!

Still no response from Wayne???.....and where the heck is john legere this year?????

In reply to Kring

you know both maps are exactly the same and both start from the high school.
