fall night rides

The club is looking for individuals who are interested in being ride leaders for fall night rides.

Perks of being a ride leader is you pick the day and start time, you ride your favorite routes.

In the past we have had both mountain bike and cross bike rides starting in the Collinsville, New Hartford and Simsbury area.

If you are interested please respond to this post or email me at brettmurno@gmail.com

Brett

Greg and I are looking into starting Tuesday night rides, beginning next week on cross bikes. Start from Iron Horse Blvd. In a few weeks switch to mountain bikes.

I am planning on reviving the old Collinsville loop on Wed nights after the Rocky Hill series wraps up. Cross bikes and lights as a minimum. The pace will be very relaxed. Beers and food at the Crown and/or Wilson's after.

I do not think Greg and I can compete with beer and food

Except I'm going to tell you right now the ride will be Thursday, not Wednesday. Because eponymous.

(cue Pat reaching for his dictionary...)

I think you need some distance from the Friday night ride, since that group is now the bulk of club members who continue to ride in the dark. Most of the "classic" Collinsville night riders are no longer in the area or in the club. We tried Thursday nights for two years and never got any traction.

I would vote for Tuesday nights from Collinsville. Post the Waynebiter© as the official route (in case no "real" ride leaders show up) but subject to change by the group. Leave open the option of other starting points (e.g. Pizzeria Marzano) via forum posts. Hell, we could even do a night ride from Berg Field to the Cobble Mountain Reservoir (23 miles and almost all gravel) with beer and food at the Coach Stop.

Note that the C&H now closes at 9, so Wilson's might be a better option in Collinsville.

As much as it pains me to admit this....Wayne is correct. We will be doing this ride on Thursday nights, possibly starting as early as next week. I will be posting the route shortly. Hopefully we can get a few of the dumpster riders to join us, I am sure there's a dumpster somewhere in Collinsville.

Also, as it is bad luck to taunt the "Prince of Darkness" I believe Bruce and Greg will be continuing the Tuesday night ride out of Simsbury as earlier posted.

I will come up with some ride descriptions and send them out to you guys most likely Saturday.

Wow. A big old argument between the President and Prince of Darkness. Just like the old days.

Brett, I will post a link later to an updated "classic" loop. Since it looks like they will never finish the bridge on Carpenter the route will have to take Sabolcik to E. Cotton Hill as a workaround.

Make sure you hang a right on Dings and a left on Carpenter to head back to Stub Hollow. The dogs will be expecting us.

Also note that Thursdays are Ping Pong Nights at the Bakerville Library. Expect massive traffic jams.

Here's the route

Time-wise, adding Sabolcik probably makes it 10-15 minutes longer than v. 1.0 but still around 2 hrs. max.

Too long and too steep a route. Maybe ok for now but as it gets colder we will be making shorter. Instead of Sabolcik we will go straight down S East Road and cross 202. Then go up Steele and either down Pussy Lane or backtrack down Town Hill (219) to Bruning and Stub Hollow. You have fun on Breezy Hill, the route is more likely going up Satan's Kingdom Rd and avoiding the washout section by taking the trail over to the transfer station road.

And BTW - I couldn't find a hard copy of an actual dictionary so I looked up eponymous in the Urban Dictionary and the ride is certainly well named.

Just tossing out some options:

Route 1 - Waynebiter 2, but chopping off a few miles. You can drop another 1.5 miles by cutting off Dings/Carpenter. Screw the dogs.

Route 2 - This takes you through the cemetery in Collinsville and along the river to the old town bridge, then past the transfer station and up Satan's Kingdom Road. Its a little under 25 miles, but you can lop off another mile or so by cutting over to Pussy Lane. This also keeps us off of 44, but involves some trespassing, so wear jerseys from other clubs/shops. I advise against any routes that take us DOWN Satan's Kingdom Rd because of the washouts.

Route 3 - This is shorter option to avoid the Dings Bridge. This skips West Rd and South Rd altogether and heads straight to Steele.

How about a night MTB ride in Nassahegan on Monday nights? The white loop in there takes about an hour during the day. It's not crazy technical and has plenty of stops to regroup.

In keeping with what John mentioned about riding on a second night distant from Friday night, what would you think about doing Wayne's ride on Tuesday nights out of Collinsville?

In reply to CrossBikeRedPants

Greg, How serious are you and Bruce about a Tuesday night ride from Simsbury? All the times that I have joined the Tuesday night ride were well attended so my preference would be to keep that going.

We had originally discussed Wed night for the Collinsville ride but Thur was more open for several people I spoke with.

I am not sure we need space from the Fri Wingbiter. Do not many of the same folks participate in both the dumpster ride and the Wingbiter during the road season? This would give the option to continue that through the fall.

John, Route 3 is what I am planning on doing, minus the Breezy Hill section. If the trail at the top of Satan's Kingdom Road is passable it allows us to by-pass the washout section at the start of the forest road and gives easy access to the Canton Transfer station road. With that the time on 44 is limited to crossing the bridge.

We have hiked down that trail a few times. It's single track but I do not recall it being very bumpy. I am going to recon it before next week.

Are you talking about the section of Tunxis Trail where you have to hop the guardrail? If so, I have ridden it. Just warn people not to dab to the left, lest you plummet down the ravine and into the river 200 feet below.

That's what would happen to me. So I'll be taking 44.

This thread is already longer than the ride. But just to make it even longer, what's the start time?

Bruce and I are definitely doing a Tuesday night off-road ride. Whether it's from Iron Horse Blvd. in Simsbury or Collinsville or anywhere else is up to you. And as a general rule, about half the Wingbiters who've ridden on the Thursday dumpster ride also show up on Friday.
