Hartford Cranksgiving, Food Drive on Two Wheels, Trinity College, Saturday Nov 18
Please consider joining my son Wyatt and me for The Greater Hartford cycling community's favorite Alleycat Race & Food Drive!
For those who have never participated before: Cranksgiving is a food drive on two wheels. This is a race for the competitive and recreational rider alike. Part bike ride, part food drive, part scavenger hunt, it was first put on by bike messengers and has been held annually in New York City since 1999. Since then, the two-wheeled-good-deed has spread to cities all over the U.S. Trinity has been hosting the Hartford edition of Cranksgiving since 2012.
Bring a bike, a bag, a lock, and about $20 to buy food items.
Back by popular demand, this year we'll also have a 12 & under Kid's race on the campus of Trinity College - a race/scavenger hunt for food. All kids receive prizes and first pass at the donuts. We have added a Cargo Class, where the shopping list is much bulkier and heavier, designed to require the use of a cargo bike or trailer.
On Cranksgiving at registration (Nov. 18th), you will receive a rider "manifest", a list of select grocery store addresses in the Greater Hartford area, and instructions on what to buy at that store. You will have to ride to at least four different grocery stores throughout the area. Your receipts are your proof-of-passage. The first rider to return to Grace Episcopal Church in Hartford is the winner.
The food will be donated to the "Place of Grace Food Pantry" at Grace Episcopal. Over 200 families are fed each week through this important effort. At last year's Cranksgiving, nearly 80 riders participated and donated just over 500 lbs in food items and received over $1000 in cash donations. This event makes a difference!
It's always a good time with prizes, good cheer, warm drinks and donuts for finishers. We hope to see you and your friends on Saturday the 18!
What a great idea, Jeff!
Great! See you there Barry.
