WHO WILL BE THERE!

I will bring a few rakes, backpack leaf blower etc. Is it possible to talk to Scott at WT and see if we can get that big blower if needed.

Pavement would be cool if WT would allow it. A lot of times there are events going on and we would have to tape the road off and add to the setup time each week. I think we should add some more turns in the start finish area to stop riders from bombing through there. That will make getting the results really hard as they would be going 30mph.

Hey TED...you have an 1hr on Sunday for some course design. You are the master!

In fact I might start a third group that sits on the patio and drinks tea with honey and sulks.

On a serious note: PLEASE don't take over the roads and block traffic. Don't run stop lights and if part of the group gets caught at a light, soft pedal (that means 10mph or less) until they catch up. Self police each other, "Car Back" means move to the right quickly but don't hit the brakes and take out someone behind you.
Be safe out there people!!

A "canine" [they have to say "canine" so we don't think they mean Underdog] just found a "hotspot" in a wooded area of New Hartford off 44 near the Canton line. New Hartford resident Joe Zakrzwski says, "we usually don't get this type of activity out here".

Yeah, except for the guy who allegedly exposed himself to a young girl at the library 2 weeks ago (and was then caught ripping down the artist's picture of him that was posted at the gas station).

The Chatterbox - Canton Police to Ticket EBCC Riders

There are 17 replies, with the last one on 08/27/2008 at 16:33:05 by CAPTAIN KIRK
Quote:
Appears that maybe a national level police association (or whatever) is promoting this crackdown by police to ticket 2 abreast cyclist.

I copied this from peleton forum. Crazy......
---Randy---
#1
mijenks

Join Date: Aug 2008Posts: 1 Incident at Rahway Park Training Crit

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wanted to make everyone aware of an incident that occurred at Rahway River Park (Rahway, NJ in Union County) last night, Tuesday August 26th, 2008. As background, there has unofficially been a training crit at Rahway River Park for the last 20-25 years according to some that frequent the Tuesday night ride. The park is open to traffic and there have been some dicey situations between car drivers and cyclists although no accidents involving both cars and bicycles have occurred to my knowledge. The whole of Rahway River Park is a left-hand turns, one-way, two-lane loop of approximately 1 mile. There are two access points to the loop and vehicles accessing the loop must yield to those already in the loop (yield signs are posted but often disregarded). Cars are often parked on the right side of the road (the outer side) although that usually still leaves a full two lanes as the right lane is quite large.

Last evening, two officers of the Union County Police Department, each in their own cruisers, blocked both lanes of the park as the unofficial training race completed its initial "neutral" lap. They informed the group of riders that they would be ticketing anyone that was (a) riding two or more abreast in the left lane (i.e. not riding single file in the left lane) or (b) riding more than two abreast in the right lane. A few cyclists stopped to discuss the officers' positions and try to work out potential situations which the officers would allow the training ride to continue but no progress was made. A large majority of the original group then re-formed and continued a training ride (albeit with much less fervor than a typical Tuesday night would include) and rode single file in the left lane for about five laps. One of the officers drove his cruiser around in front of the field, occupying the left lane, driving around 25 mph -- the speed limit in the park. After a lap or two of doing this, he turned on his flashing lights and, along with the second officer, again blocked both lanes of the park. I was not present to hear their reasoning on blocking the road again, although I would guess they were reiterating their intent to write tickets to those not riding single file.

At this point, most people stopped riding and congregated in the parking lot to discuss the prospects of holding future training rides at the park. In order to keep having the training ride, it was suggested that we write letters to the following expressing our concerns:

Mayor of Rahway James J Kennedy
The Union County Police Department
The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders
The Star-Ledger

The relevant NJ Statutes are below. Note especially "A bicyclist may move left under any of the following conditions: . . . 4) To occupy any available lane when traveling at the same speed as other traffic . . . " Within the statute there are contradictions when the conditions occurring during a typical Rahway Training Race happen so I'm not sure how it all would be interpreted, since we are traveling at the same speed or slightly faster than other traffic and thus are entitled to take any available lane:

39:4-14.2, 39:4-10.11 Operating Regulations.
Every person riding a bicycle on a roadway shall ride as near to the right roadside as practicable exercising due care when passing a standing vehicle or one proceeding in the same direction. A bicyclist may move left under any of the following conditions: 1) To make a left turn from a left turn lane or pocket; 2) To avoid debris, drains, or other hazardous conditions on the right; 3) To pass a slower moving vehicle; 4) To occupy any available lane when traveling at the same speed as other traffic; 5) To travel no more than two abreast when traffic is not impeded, but otherwise ride in single file. Every person riding a bicycle should ride in the same direction as vehicular traffic.

In New Jersey, the law states a bicyclist must obey all state and local automobile driving laws. A parent may be held responsible for the child's violation of any traffic law.

Also, aside from 39:4-14.2, 39:4-10.11, there is a section granting the same rights and duties to bicyclists as motor vehicle drivers:

39:4-14.1 Rights and Duties of Persons on Bicycles.
Every person riding a bicycle on a roadway is granted all the rights and subject to all of the duties of the motor vehicle driver.

If anyone has any insight, suggestions, past experience, let me know.

Mike Jenks
